How long until your trades website pays for itself?
The honest math: how many extra jobs does a properly built trades website need to land before it's paid for itself? The answer is less than you'd think, and the compounding after that is where the real return lives.
Every trades business owner asks some version of this question before they commit to a real website: when does this thing pay back?
It's a fair question. Here's the math, end to end. No marketing fluff. Real numbers.
The inputs
Let's use a typical Alberta trades operator as the test case. Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, whatever, the math is similar.
- Site cost: $2,400 upfront (Standard build).
- Hosting and updates: $30/month.
- Your time to provide content/feedback: roughly 8 hours over 2 weeks.
- Average job value: we'll say $800 net (gross minus materials and labour). Your number is probably higher.
If your average net job is bigger than $800, the math gets easier. If smaller, it's still positive but takes longer.
The output
This is where most calculators stop being useful. They assume "the website will magically bring you 10 new customers per month." That's not how this works.
What actually happens, on average, when a trades business replaces a generic template website with a properly built one:
- Conversion rate from visitor to inquiry goes up 2 to 3x. The same Google traffic, same word-of-mouth, same business cards now produces more calls because the site doesn't lose people to slow loads, missing phone numbers, or stock photos.
- The site stops being a drag on referrals. Right now, customers who hear about you from a referral Google your business before calling. If they land on a broken Wix site, half of them hesitate. A real site closes that gap.
- Local SEO foundations kick in over 6-12 months. The schema, service-area pages, and properly tagged content slowly start ranking. Free traffic begins arriving on its own.
For a typical Alberta trades business doing 20 jobs/month right now, "2 to 3x conversion uplift" usually translates to 3 to 6 additional jobs per month within 90 days of launch. That's the conservative version.
The payback math
3 additional jobs per month at $800 net = $2,400 in additional revenue per month.
That covers the entire upfront cost in roughly 30 days. Everything after that is on the house.
Let's be more conservative. Say the lift is only 1 additional job per month, not 3. At $800 net, that's $800/month in additional revenue.
- Site cost: $2,400 / $800 per month = 3 months to payback
- Plus ongoing hosting of $30/month, easily paid for by the new monthly revenue
Even at the conservative end, you're net positive by month 3. By month 12, you've recovered the cost 4x over.
Where this math goes wrong
The above assumes a properly built site. Most trades websites are not properly built. Here are the cases where the math doesn't work:
- The site is built on a generic template. Doesn't load fast, doesn't have proper service-area pages, doesn't have a tap-to-call button. Visitors leave. The "extra job per month" never materializes because conversion stays the same.
- The site has no SEO foundation. Customers can't find it through search. You're paying for a brochure, not an asset.
- The site doesn't pair with Google Business Profile and reviews. A great site by itself in a vacuum doesn't help if customers aren't finding it. Pair the site with GBP setup, reviews collection, and basic local SEO.
- You don't have any inbound channel at all. If your business is 100% word of mouth and zero search traffic, a website helps less in the short term. It still matters for closing referred-customer trust gaps, but the conversion uplift math is smaller.
The compounding part
This is what most agencies don't talk about because they want to keep selling you upgrades. The properly-built site that pays for itself in month 3 doesn't stop paying you back. It compounds for years.
Year 1: 1 to 3 extra jobs per month from conversion uplift.
Year 2: SEO starts producing. 3 to 6 extra jobs per month from organic search. Same site. No additional cost.
Year 3+: 5 to 15 extra jobs per month from a combination of search, reviews, referral conversion, and the site doing what it's supposed to do. Still the same site you paid for in year zero.
Over 5 years, a $2,400 site that produces an average of 4 extra jobs per month at $800/each generates roughly $192,000 in incremental revenue. That's a 80:1 return on the initial investment. The hosting fees over 5 years total $1,800. The all-in cost-to-return ratio is somewhere around 45:1.
When the math doesn't work
Two scenarios where we'd tell you not to bother right now:
- You're testing a business idea, less than 90 days in. You don't know yet if you'll still be doing this in a year. Spend $0 on a website until revenue is real.
- You have no time to provide content. A site we build is 70% our work, 30% yours. The 30% (photos, telling us what your services are, reviewing the draft) can't be outsourced. If you can't dedicate 8 hours over 2 weeks, the site doesn't get built right, and the math falls apart.
The short answer
A properly built trades website pays for itself in 1 to 3 months for most Alberta trades operators. After that, it compounds for years.
The wrong question is "is this worth $2,400?" The right question is "what's the cost of NOT having this for the next five years?"
